What Is a STAR Smog Check?
California’s STAR Program is part of the state’s vehicle emissions inspection system. STAR stations meet additional performance standards established by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) and are monitored as part of the program.
Some vehicles are directed to STAR stations based on California’s emissions program requirements. If your DMV registration notice specifies a STAR inspection, you should choose a station authorized to perform that type of test.
Not every vehicle requires a STAR inspection. Your vehicle’s circumstances and DMV instructions determine which testing requirements apply.
For official information, visit the California Bureau of Automotive Repair’s Smog Check Program.
When Do You Need a STAR Smog Check?
You may need a STAR inspection if California’s vehicle emissions program directs you to a STAR-certified station. The requirements can vary according to your vehicle and registration circumstances.
Consider checking your STAR testing requirements if:
- Your DMV registration renewal notice directs you to a STAR station.
- You have received instructions specifying a STAR-certified inspection.
- You are unsure which type of smog test your vehicle requires.
If you are uncertain, review your DMV notice or contact the California DMV or Bureau of Automotive Repair for guidance. You can also call our shop before visiting to discuss your testing needs.
